Perfect Harmony Men’s Chorus of Madison presents
“A Winter Evening” Choral Concert

Friday, December 8, 2017, 7:30pm
Sunday, December 10, 2017, 3:00pm
First United Methodist Church,
203 Wisconsin Ave., Madison

Join us for our annual winter concerts on December 8 & 10, 2017, titled "A Winter Evening". A combination of a capella and accompanied pieces from across the centuries will give warmth and bring joy to you this holiday season.

Artistic Director Kevin Hage has selected not only traditional Christmas carols such as "Silent Night" and "Sleigh Ride", but also modernized versions of "The Holly and the Ivy" and "Oh! Christmas Tree???". "One Light" celebrates the Festival of Lights, Hanukkah.

A frosty evening is imagined in a musical setting of "Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening" by Randall Thompson. And to continue that warm feeling of a winter evening spent fireside with a book, "A Country Boy in Winter" takes its playful yet contemplative lyrics from from the nineteenth-century poet Sarah Orne Jewett, with music composed by gay composer Greg Bartholomew. Twentieth-century poets Sara Teasdale and James Agee provide the words to two somewhat more serious pieces with deep harmonies.

And what would a "Sleigh Ride" be without "Sleigh Bells"? Some fast-paced pieces, a chant, and a round "round out" the program. Perfect Harmony's outreach ensemble, Common Chords, will also perform two a capella pieces.

Advanced tickets are $15 and can be purchased from members of the chorus or online at www.PerfectHarmonyChorus.org, Tickets at the door will be $20.

October 11 is observed as National Coming Out Day and marks the anniversary of the 1987 National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights.

Though the LGBT community has experienced great victories in recent years and decades, there are still many for whom being out and open about their sexuality/gender could lead to bullying, discrimination, abandonment, or death. They cannot fully be themselves.

We still have a long way to go.

A decade before the National March, Harvey Milk bravely took a stand. May his words remind us of the importance of merely being who we are:

"Gay brothers and sisters,...You must come out. Come out... to your parents... I know that it is hard and will hurt them, but think about how they will hurt you in the voting booth! Come out to your relatives... come out to your friends... if indeed they are your friends. Come out to your neighbors... to your fellow workers... to the people who work where you eat and shop... come out only to the people you know, and who know you. Not to anyone else. But once and for all, break down the myths, destroy the lies and distortions. For your sake. For their sake."
